HANK adjusted the pillow under his head and watched Lindsey in the bathroom. She had on a white terrycloth hotel robe, and she was bending over a white ceramic washbasin on a stainless-steel table. Given that their whole room was the size of a big walk-in closet, and the bathroom had about as much space as a pantry, he found it hard to think of the hotel as a bargain, New York or notâthough on the whole, heâd have to admit, the place was something else. Theyâd parked in a lot and crossed West 58th, rolling their suitcases behind them over blacktop and concrete toward a set of modernish glass doors that opened onto two narrow escalators. The entry hadnât looked promising, but Lindsey had reassured them that sheâd seen pictures on the web and that the place would be nice. Still, once theyâd climbed the escalators they had all been surprised by the lavish expanses of polished wood and brick and the striking glass roof over crossbeams wrapped in hanging vines. Hank had laughed out loud, the way he did when he was both surprised and impressed.
Lindsey dabbed at her eyes with a blue washcloth and stepped back a few inchesâwhich was all the space she had before she backed into the closed bathroom doorâto look at herself in a mirror hanging over the basin. Hank was watching her from a double bed that filled the entire room save a foot or so on each side of it for bedside tables and a narrow gap at the foot where a sliver of a desk backed up against a glass wall that looked into the bathroom. Hank had showered when theyâd first arrived. He was surprised, upon stepping into the bathtub, to find a glass wall between the shower and the bedroom. He couldnât see out to the bed, but he assumed from the lightingâand why else would you put a glass wall looking into a shower?âthat Lindsey could see him clearly. He waved to her, heard her laugh, and then pulled a white plastic curtain closed for privacy. A moment later, once he had started showering, Lindsey came into the bathroom, reached across him, and pulled the curtain open. She said, âItâs incredibly sexy,â and then left him to shower feeling like he was on camera.
While he watched her in front of the washbasin, Lindsey ran the palms of her hands over her hair, smoothing it down. She leaned closer to the mirror and ran a finger along her forehead, tracing her hairline; then she stepped back, took off her robe, and got into the shower. If she was aware of Hank watching, it wasnât showing. She had left him asleep in bed, and he guessed she thought he was still sleeping as she crouched, ran the water and tested it on her outstretched hand, and then stood and tilted her head up, eyes closed, to the shower. The circular stream of water splashed off her face. She was right.
